The Fine Print, Minus the Fine Print

Shipping, returns & care.

Plain English, short paragraphs, no gotchas. If any of this leaves a question, ask the maker directly.

Shipping

Shipping is quoted with your order total — based on the actual piece and your actual ZIP code — so there's no surprise math at the end. Small goods (bottle openers, keepsake boxes) travel USPS Priority or UPS Ground. Benches, ottomans, and chests ship well-crated ground or freight depending on distance.

Photos before it ships. Every order includes photos of your finished piece before it's boxed. If anything looks off to you, it gets fixed before shipping — not argued about after.

If something arrives damaged

Send photos of the piece and the packaging within 48 hours of delivery. You choose the fix: repair, replacement, or a full refund, including shipping. The insurance claim is our problem, not yours.

Returns & exchanges

Catalog pieces: if a piece isn't right for your space, you have 30 days from delivery to return it in original condition for a full refund of the piece price. Return shipping is on you; refunds go out within a few days of the piece arriving back.

Custom commissions: a piece built to your dimensions can't go back on a shelf, so commissions aren't returnable — which is exactly why they start with a sketch and a fixed quote, and include photos at every stage. You approve the piece before it ships. If a commission arrives and doesn't match what was agreed, that's not a return — that's on the shop, and it gets made right.

The maker's guarantee

Every piece is guaranteed on construction for its lifetime: if a joint fails or hardware works loose under normal use, send a photo and it will be repaired or replaced. The guarantee doesn't cover normal weathering and finish wear (raw cedar turning silver outdoors is a feature, and an outdoor bench asking for its yearly re-coat is maintenance — not a defect), damage from misuse, or pieces that have been modified. When in doubt, just ask — the default answer is to make it right.

Payment

Orders are paid by secure emailed invoice — card or the usual electronic options, spelled out with your quote. Nothing is charged until you confirm your order. Commissions are split: 50% to schedule the build, the balance before shipping.

Care guide

Outdoor benches (sealed pine)

Once a year, wipe the bench down and rub in a fresh coat of exterior finish — a 15-minute job with a rag. That's the whole routine, and it's what keeps a pine bench taking the weather for decades.

Raw cedar outdoors (birdhouses)

Do nothing. Truly. Cedar left raw outdoors weathers to a soft silver-gray and keeps resisting rot and insects the entire time.

Oiled & sealed indoor pieces (cedar, oak, and friends)

Dust with a dry cloth. Wipe spills when they happen. Once a year, or whenever the surface starts looking thirsty, apply a thin coat of furniture oil and buff it out.

Aromatic cedar interiors (boxes & chests)

The interior is left unfinished on purpose — that's where the moth-repelling scent comes from. When the scent fades after a few years, a light pass with fine sandpaper inside brings it right back. Never oil or varnish the inside of a cedar chest.

Walnut (turned goods)

Bottle openers and turned pieces are finished with a food-safe oil-and-wax blend. Hand-wash if needed, dry it, and every once in a while rub in a drop of mineral oil or board butter. Don't put wood in a dishwasher — it takes it personally.
